AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
|
Scholarships for international students studying English as a Second Language (ESL) in the USA can be somewhat limited, particularly scholarships to come to the US specifically to study ESL. However, there may be something available from the school you plan to attend or from certain charitable, cultural or non-governmental organizations. For instance, at some colleges, all new students are eligible and automatically considered for entrance scholarships regardless of what they plan to study. Be sure to ask. And one example of an external scholarship for ESL study is the Rotary Club's Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships, awarded to students applying for 3 or 6 months of language study and cultural immersion abroad.
At some schools, scholarships are only available to ESL students after a year of study if they have demonstrated academic excellence and/or community involvement. Others may be awarded for excellence in an ESL program with the intention that the recipient will use the scholarship to attend a US college or university. You should check with any school you choose to attend to see if they have any scholarships or know of any that you might apply for.
